Old News & Previous Events
Join us on the morning of Friday, June 30 to learn about birding with experienced birder Nic Salick. We will meet at the Botna Bend Park access in Hancock at 7:30am, and Rubber Duck Outfitters will shuttle us to Edgington Memorial Park in Avoca. Nic Salick will discuss some basics about birding and some of the more common birds that we might see and hear on the river. We will then paddle back to Hancock, looking and listening for birds along the way. Once we arrive back in Hancock, people are free to leave from there, but are encouraged to stick around and explore the park.
YOU MUST REGISTER AND PAY ONLINE IN ADVANCE. To register, fill out the form below. Registration is due Wednesday, June 28, but space is limited so register early to ensure your spot!
We will rent canoes from Rubber Duck Outfitters in Hancock. Cost is $20 per person and includes canoe rental and shuttle. You can pay online using PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal account, you can pay by cash or check at the Golden Hills RC&D office (712 S. Hwy. St. in Oakland).
The trip will likely take about 3 hours. Due to safety, the event will be cancelled for inclement weather or if the water level is unsafe for paddling. If the event is cancelled, payments will be refunded.
All skill levels are welcome to attend, though we would prefer participants to have at least some experience with paddling. All participants will be required to sign a waiver, and will be required to have a personal flotation device with them while on the water. PFD's will be provided by the outfitter and included in the cost.
Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy. Bring binoculars if you have them!
Please email lance@goldenhillsrcd.org with any questions.
The river access is located on the southwest side of Botna Bend County Park. You can park on the grass along the gravel drive between the entrance and bathroom building. Botna Bend Park has a $2 daily entrance fee, so bring $2 if you do not have an annual Pottawattamie County Parks pass.
