Camping and Lodging

The West Nish is a non-meandered stream, which means that the land under and adjacent to the water trail (including sandbars and riverbanks) is privately owned, with the exception of a few public parks along the river. Camping is prohibited on private land without prior landowner approval, and you could be charged with trespassing if you camp on private land without permission.

​Public camping is available at the following locations (click here to see map) 
  • Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds, Avoca 
  • Botna Bend County Park, Hancock 
  • ​Camp Nishna Valley, Hancock
  • Chautauqua City Park, Oakland 
  • Millstone City Park, Carson
  • Old Town County Park, Macedonia

Hotels/Motels (all in Avoca): 
  • Cobblestone Inn & Suites
  • Motel 6
  • Acova Inn
  • Capri Motel

Bed & Breakfasts: 
  • ​Big Grove Village (5 miles SE of Oakland) 
Camping/Lodging
Most of the land near the water trail, including sandbars, is privately owned. Do not camp along the river without the landowner's permission. 

Public camping is available in each community, but the only motels are located in Avoca. One bed and breakfast is available near Oakland.
